Member Monday - Aly Willis Photography

March 21, 2016

On Mondays we highlight our members so you can get to know the Island Birth Association community a little better! This Monday we meet Aly of Aly Willis Photography. We'd also like to give a very special thank you to Aly for taking our board member's group photo and headshots!

Tell us a little about you and your business.

I grew up on Whidbey Island and have been building my photography business for about 8 years. I take a lifestyle/candid approach to my work, and love trying to capture the moments of a shoot instead of just the poses. Which is why I love being a part of births! I have 3 incredible children, the latest was born at home with the aid of Midwife Cynthia Jaffe. One of the best experiences of my life.

What attracted you to birth work?

About 5 years ago I came across some birth photos my colleague took. They took my breath away. I had never imagined having someone photograph a birth! After asking a friend if I could take pictures of her labor and delivery, I knew there was no turning back. The more I've gotten involved in birth work, the more I have fallen in love. I love my fellow birth workers and all we stand for. I love the rawness and power of birth. I love being able to capture that in what I do.

How does your service help women and families?

By photographing births and the events surrounding it, it helps bring back the emotions and everything that happened to light. I can't tell you how many times I've delivered images to have the families amazed by a small moment they had forgotten about. It helps the moms remember how strong they were and how incredible their whole birth process is! It also allows families to share these moments with people who weren't able to be there at the birth.

What’s one thing you’d like us to know about you?

I love and am super passionate about what I do, not only with my photography but with the birth community.

Thanks, Aly! We're so glad to have you as a member of Island Birth Association! You can find more information about Aly on our Photographers page in our Member Directory.
