International Doula Month 2017

May 21, 2017

International Doula Month occurs every May. We use this month to celebrate and show our appreciation of doula’s. It’s also a great time to raise awareness of what exactly it is a doula does. This Doula Month  2017  Island Birth Association has the honor of hosting the window display at the Oak Harbor Sno-Isle Library branch.

What does a doula do?

With the heavy client load most obstetricians have, getting all of the info you want and need can be difficult at 10-15 minute appointments. Most doulas also act as an educator. Helping you to know all of your options before the big day. She will be supporting you mentally and emotionally before labor even begins.

Your doula will support you with tried and true pain relief techniques, usually arriving to your house during early labor

. She will also help your partner to help you. A lot of times partners are thrown into the birthing room with no idea how to help. Your doula will help them either implement techniques or do the technique themselves so your partner can solely focus on giving you emotional support. She will remind you of the birth you want to have even when it is tough but support you if your needs change. She will advocate for you to be given all the information before you make any decisions.

She will be there after baby is born to make sure you are establishing a healthy breastfeeding relationship and also to make sure you and your partner are nourishing yourselves.

**Use of a doula is reported to:

  • 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*

  • 28% decrease in the risk of C-section*

  • 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*

  • 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief

  • 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery

  • 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*

Island Birth Association and the women of Whidbey Island thank all of the local doulas here supporting us in some of our most formative times as a woman. We see you and we appreciate the love and energy you pour into our community.
