On Mondays we highlight our members so you can get to know the Island Birth Association community a little better! This Monday we meet Erica of Badass Birthing, who is also an Island Birth Association founding board member.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business.
I'm Erica. I'm a military spouse, mom to four crazy boys, a marathon runner, and a very amateur indoor rock climber. I'm also a birth advocate and doula.
What attracted you to birth work?
I have always loved birth work, but after seeing how impersonal birth can become, I started advocating for changes. I started helping expecting families find the best providers for them, locating the best birth locations for them, and planning for empowering births. From there, a friend asked me to start certification and officially be her birth doula. I fell in love with the job - Instantly. It's the hardest, but most amazing job that I could ever imagine. I love every second, and I was hooked from the first moment that I watched her daughter come Earth Side.
How does your service help women and families?
As a birth doula I support women in their birth choices. Period. I help women gain the power to ask the tough questions, to make sure they have all the information to make an informed decision, and then I stand by whatever they decide is best for them. I help the partners relax, and I help them know that this is all a normal part of child birth. I guide them on how to help their laboring partner, and then I make sure they take all the credit. I also bring oodles of snacks, Gatorade, and coffee to keep those support people energized and awake.
What's one thing you'd like us to know about you?
The most important thing regarding my birth work is that my only agenda is honoring moms wishes. I can honestly say I support all births- as long as it's your choice and not being pushed on you. I don't know anyone's journey, and as such, I don't know what the right birth is for you and your baby. My job is to help you define what you want your birth to look like, and then we work to tip those odds in our favor. If things go off track, I'm there 100%- either helping to get them back on track, or helping moms adjust emotionally when plans change.
Thanks, Erica! We're so lucky to have you as a founding member of Island Birth Association! You can find more information about Erica on our Doulas page in our Member Directory.
